Reconciliation habits for cold storage
When assets rarely leave cold storage, teams sometimes skip daily discipline and then scramble before an audit. The Crypto Custody Record Lab treats quiet days as practice days: short closes that still confirm who holds keys, which devices were accessed, and whether any planned movement slipped.
Habit one: attest even when nothing moved
A one-line attestation — “no vault access; balances unchanged vs prior close” — signed by the duty role beats an empty folder. Emptiness looks like neglect.
Habit two: log access attempts separately from balances
Device checkouts and failed unlock attempts belong in an access log. Mixing them into balance rows makes both harder to read.
Habit three: schedule deeper reviews
Weekly or monthly, reopen a fuller reconciliation that samples address ownership evidence. Daily noise stays low; periodic depth stays intentional.
